The Wealden District Council provided a fantastic opportunity for five of our Year 9 students to take part in a (very) public speaking competition on the subject of how technology is affecting democracy. The audience was filled with councillors, mayors, chairs of local councils as well as the 4 judges and parents and teachers from other participating schools.
Our team, comprising Jasper, Freya and Erin presenting, and Bertie and Isabelle as supporting researchers, were an absolute credit to Beacon Academy. The judges were greatly impressed by the slightly different approach to the argument that the team used: rather than just look at the pros and cons of technology with regards to democracy, they conducted some research among their peers and gave advice to the political figures present, on how to engage Gen Z and the Alpha Generation with political debate through the use of social media and technology. This was particularly relevant given the Bill in Parliament at the moment proposing to lower the voting age to 16. Citing Ed Davy as a politician who already engages effectively on social media, the team brought some humour to the proceedings by presenting some rather unusual photos with very serious messages. They also gave a warning to their peers about the unreliability of using social media and AI to make decisions about their views, along with the importance of fact checking sources, given that AI is prone to hallucinate.
The adjective used by the judges to describe the team was 'Sassy' and they came away with not a single negative comment in the feedback given.
Although they didn't win and come away with a teddy bear each, Wealden District Council did provide certificates and some rather delicious cupcakes, which all agreed were far preferable to a furry toy. But of course, the most valuable gift from the whole experience was seeing these students grow in confidence and self-belief over the course of the evening.
A wonderful start for them, on a journey of deep thinking, debate and public speaking!
