SEND Information

Beacon Academy ensures all students have access to a broad, balanced and relevant curriculum, in order to realise their full potential. We support all students to make outstanding academic and personal progress and to grow to be equipped for their future lives.

We understand that what matters most for students with additional needs is that they receive high quality teaching from subject experts in the classroom. At Beacon, this high quality teaching comes from a focus on the six principles of excellent teaching;

Challenge…

…so that students have high expectations of what they can achieve

Explanations…

…to enable students to acquire new knowledge and skills.

Modelling…

…so that students know how to apply knowledge and skills

Deliberate practice…

…so that key knowledge and skills become embedded

Questioning…

…so that students are made to think hard with breadth, depth and accuracy

Feedback…

…so that students think about and further develop their knowledge and skills

Our whole school focus on MARK (being motivated, articulate, resilient and knowledgeable) is particularly important for our students with SEND. We teach our students with additional needs to understand and evaluate how they learn best, to articulate their thoughts and needs, to be persistent when a task is challenging and have the highest expectations in learning our curriculum and take pride in their growing knowledge.

We want all our students to achieve excellence in all they do and recognise that a range of different provision in and out of the classroom will be needed for some students. We recognise that for some students, adaptation, differentiation and personalisation will be needed, along with rigorous monitoring and regular reviews to ensure that they are making excellent progress. Some students may need specifically targeted, specialist and intensive interventions to support them to realise their potential. Our committed team of teaching assistants work closely with both teaching staff and Student Support to ensure a joined-up approach to supporting students’ academic and pastoral needs.

The Crowborough and District Cluster Group work together to support pupils with special educational needs. For more information please see our SEND Information Report 2024 which includes information that is considered most useful and explains how we support pupils with Special Educational Needs and disabilities.
