Curriculum Intent

The Geography Department is ambitious for excellence in all we do. We continuously debate the knowledge skills and scope of our curriculum. Geography is ever changing and our delivery must keep up with current events in the Physical and Human environment. Our curriculum has breadth and depth, and is global and local in scale. Looking, for example, at the small scale process of freeze-thaw weathering on a hillside to the geopolitical and socioeconomic implications of globalisation. The KS3 curriculum enables students to be conversant with global issues which will affect their future lives, for example, climate change and development inequality. The curriculum’s breadth and depth enriches our students with significant cultural capital.

Teachers in the Geography Department are subject experts who persistently advance their knowledge. Our teachers are consistently researching, and learning more about the topics we teach. It is important that students see this quality in their teachers and that this is discussed with students. They debate the relevance of the curriculum and make changes where necessary to ensure that the content remains relevant and reflective of the community and country in which we teach. The role of the teacher is to instruct students into making synoptic links across Physical and Human environments creating a broad understanding of the world around them.

Students will work to have a full knowledge and understanding of local and global processes, places and peoples. This ensures a well-rounded citizen, with appreciation of the dynamic Human and natural environments they are a part of, and promotes respect for their place in the world. They will be developing a deep love of knowledge and the ability to independently learn throughout their lives.
