Curriculum Intent

To enable students to confidently think and reason mathematically in order to solve a wide range of problems; to successfully apply mathematical knowledge and skills in their personal and professional lives.

All Beacon students strive to make their MARK by being motivated, ambitious, resilient, and knowledgeable. All Maths teachers are extremely enthusiastic about their subject and will encourage and support every child. With their experience, we are able to offer a syllabus which caters for the full range of abilities as well as providing resources and the necessary requirements for our SEND students. Students are also encouraged to look beyond the syllabus and gain an understanding of how topics are related to real life scenarios, and to be proud to show what they have found to their teachers or to the rest of the class.

To have every student enjoy Mathematics just for the sake of the problem solving, and not just because they need it for future careers, is the objective of all our teachers in the department and we hope that they continue with the subject into A-Level, and beyond.

Students are encouraged to work independently when undertaking their homework, with the emphasis being on understanding what they are doing when answering questions provided for homework. Support is provided in Keep Up sessions after school where any misunderstandings or difficulties can be addressed with the students. Parental contact will always be made should we have concerns with our students’ efforts or their understanding of the homework set.
