Curriculum Intent
It is the aim of the Physical Education “PE” Department to deliver a broad and inclusive sporting curriculum that will empower our students with the knowledge and physical wellbeing to become well rounded, confident, and resilient members of society. It is our intent that the young people under our care strive to be the best they can be in sport and physical activity and in addition, we aspire to pass on the psychological, cultural, and physiological benefits of a lifelong engagement in sport and physical activity.
All Beacon students strive to make their MARK by being motivated, ambitious, resilient, and knowledgeable.
Year 7, 8 and 9 PE (Physical Education) offers a broad curriculum of sporting activities for students, which allows them to develop a wide range of skills and the ability to use tactics, strategies, and compositional ideas to perform successfully. Students are given the opportunity to analyse a range of different situations and apply their own decisions. At Beacon, PE allows pupils to work as individuals, in groups and in teams, developing concepts of fair play and of personal and social responsibility. They take on different roles and responsibilities, including leadership, coaching, and officiating. Through the range of experiences that PE offers, they learn how to be effective in competitive, creative, and challenging situations. The department has introduced a theory curriculum at KS3, content which is delivered through practical PE lessons and allows students to increase their knowledge and understanding of physical activity concepts from an early age. This breaks down barriers of PE being seen a purely a practical subject and better prepares our students for KS4 PE. At KS4 all students follow a level 2 course pathway. They choose from GCSE PE, Sport Science or Performance.
Our teachers within the department are subject experts who persistently advance their knowledge, both in terms of practical activities and theoretical content.
Our students, including the most disadvantaged, together with those with SEND (Special Educational Needs and Disability), will develop a deep knowledge of the broad and diverse curriculum on offer. They will study a wide variety of practical activities both traditional sports and the more alternative or modern variations. The PE department strives to ensure students develop a love of learning and physical activity and how this will impact their lives both physically, mentally, and socially.
