Curriculum Intent
Through our carefully sequenced knowledge rich curriculum, our students learn artistic skill and cultural understanding. Students master increasingly advanced techniques in the most significant artistic mediums, drawing, painting printmaking and sculpture. Alongside this, they learn the historical, social, cultural contexts of key genres, and how they reflect and influence society. Through practice and knowledge students develop the confidence to skilfully experiment with ideas and materials. Their knowledge of form and technique allows our students to effectively express personal ideas, experiences and identity.
The Art curriculum exposes students to various careers in the Arts, effectively linking classroom practice and real-world applications. It emphasises personal development by offering opportunities for students to explore the lives of diverse artists and their societal contributions to the arts, which in turn informs and develops student’s ideas, insights and viewpoints. Additionally, extra-curricular clubs, visits, and art competitions support students to develop their creativity and knowledge which broadens their art education.
Our teachers within the department are subject experts who persistently advance their knowledge. Our teachers are working artists, consistently researching, exploring, creating and learning more about the topics they teach. It is important that students see this quality in their teachers and that this is discussed with students. Teachers debate the relevance of the curriculum and make changes where necessary to ensure that the content remains relevant and reflective of the community and country in which we teach.
Our students, including the most disadvantaged, together with those with SEND, will develop a deep knowledge of the broad and diverse curriculum on offer. As a result of this, they will be eager to learn more, and able to reflect upon and discuss the work of artists. At Beacon, students gain confidence and ambition to continue Art and Photography into further education, and the aim of the department is to ensure Art and Photography students develop a love of learning that carries them through their lives.
