Inspiring language learning: Mingalaba
On Friday, Year 9 students received a motivational talk from Steve Eadon of Mingalaba, looking at the value of languages through the world of football and professional sports.
Steve regaled students with his experiences and stories from the time he spent working with some of the world’s top footballers through Arsenal Football Club.
Steve talked about how after being an initial reluctant learner of languages at secondary school, he had gone on to study languages at A Level and then at university. Steve talked about how his enjoyment of languages had opened doors for him, enabling him to travel all over the world. Steve also emphasised that learning a language widens students’ horizons, giving them vital tools for the future such as resilience and communication skills. Great motivation for continuing languages into GCSE! The students were fascinated and engaged throughout, sharing the passion and interest created by Steve.
Following the assembly, some Year 9 French students were invited to attend a French language session with Steve, where they covered all skills of listening, reading, translating and learning new vocabulary to describe a football match. These students were highly motivated and enjoyed the session.
Head of Modern Foreign Languages, Mrs Noble, commented:
"It is lovely to have a guest speaker in that highlights the benefits of learning a language, how it sets people apart from one another and how it offers just fantastic opportunities for meeting new people and discovering new places. I am sure that students will reflect on the opportunities that learning a language can offer them."
