Beacon Alumni Spotlight: James Cooper Inspires Year 11 students!
We were delighted to welcome back Beacon alumnus, James Cooper, to share his incredible journey and words of wisdom with our Year 11 students, as they prepare to embark on their GCSE exams.
James, founder of the Smilinggg initiative, completed a staggering 366 marathons in 2024 to raise awareness for Samaritans and the Smilinggg mission. His dedication, resilience, and passion for promoting mental well-being were truly inspiring as he encouraged our students to embrace challenges, stay focused, and support one another through tough times.
James shared a powerful lesson he has learned from his marathons:
“If last year taught me anything it’s that we are all capable of so much more than we imagine. Putting one foot in front of the other, no matter how insignificant it seems, you’re progressing. Forward motion is progress no matter how slow it may sometimes feel. Whether on the trail or in life.”
His words were a timely reminder that even small steps forward add up to huge achievements, and it's the journey that matters most, not just the destination.
His visit was a timely reminder that perseverance, positivity, and a strong support system can make all the difference. We are so proud of James and all that he has achieved, and grateful for the advice he offered our students at this crucial time in their academic journey.
James even bumped into fellow alumnus, Chef Ian Brunsdon, who was here to judge the final of our MasterChef 2025 competition!
